The Orthophonic Victrola should always be played with the lid closed. As the sound box generates more volume and delivers it to the tone chamber, it also delivers more sound energy from the back of the diaphragm. The diaphragm sound is high pitched and piercing, and unpleasant on certain notes unless the lid be closed, cutting it off.
Unless you use a  Tungs-tone stylus,
only use one needle per play to preserve your records.
Used steel needles can ruin records.
